Hiking Trails

  • Petrified Dunes Trail

Early morning and late afternoon offer the best lighting and cooler temperatures. Spring and fall provide ideal hiking conditions.

A brief, family-friendly walk leading into a narrow sandstone slot with shaded walls and sculpted rock formations. The terrain is mostly flat desert path transitioning into soft sand and smooth rock. Best visited in the morning for shade and cooler air. Enjoyable year-round, though summer afternoons can be hot.

  • Lava Flow Trail

This popular interpretive trail crosses ancient black lava fields contrasted against red rock cliffs. The terrain alternates between packed dirt, lava rock, and uneven basalt sections. Early morning or sunset provides dramatic contrast lighting and cooler hiking conditions. Spring and fall are best for comfort.

  • White Rocks Trail

A scenic loop offering views of white sandstone formations, desert valleys, and distant mountain backdrops. The terrain includes sand, slickrock, and mild elevation gain. Morning hikes avoid midday heat, while late afternoon enhances the white rock glow. Best in spring and fall.

  • Cinder Cone Trail

A moderately strenuous climb to a volcanic cinder cone with panoramic views of lava fields and red cliffs. Loose volcanic gravel can be slippery on ascent. Early morning is recommended to avoid heat and wind exposure. Ideal in cooler months.

Camping

Developed campground with restrooms and water. Dispersed camping available on surrounding BLM land.
